California Borehole Temperatures

This resource is a compilation of Borehole Temperature observation data for oil, gas, and geothermal wells in the state of California, obtained from the California Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR) wells database. Borehole temperatures were compiled from over 10,000 oil-and-gas wells from geophysical logs provided by the DOGGR, over 1,800 Geosteam thermal fields, Long Valley caldera geothermal well data provided by the USGS, and production data reports for geothermal wells throughout California. This resource was provided by the Arizona Geological Survey and made available for distribution through the National Geothermal Data System.

Due to the large number of oil and gas wells in California, several wells were selected at random from each oil and gas field and wildcat wells to provide temperatures representative of the field. The selection process included wells that had electric or temperature geophysical logs and maximum borehole temperature reported. Maximum temperature for boreholes are recorded on geophysical logs viewable online at DOGGR.

The borehole temperature data were compiled as interchange exchange data content for interoperability in the National Geothermal Data System; the data was published as an ESRI service endpoint, a web map service, and a web feature service, and included in the National Geothermal Data System as an Excel workbook for download. The workbook contains 6 worksheets, including information about the template, notes related to revisions of the template, Resource provider information, the data, a field list (data mapping view) and vocabularies (data valid terms) used to populate the data worksheet . Fields in the data table include HeaderURI, WellName , APINo, OtherID, Operator, LeaseName, SpudDate, Status, Field, Latitude, Longitude, Measured Temperature, Measurement Date, Related Resources, and Source. The data were compiled by the Arizona Geological Survey and made available for distribution through the National Geothermal Data System.
